Hippie and a Nun Productions is a female-led independent production company founded by filmmaker Monique Efta and actress/producer Lea Roman.
 
What started as a joke between two friends somehow became the perfect description of who they are.

One spiritually curious wild child.
One former minister turned queer filmmaker.

Lea once asked Monique if she remembered “doing LSD and tripping” in her early twenties.

Monique replied: “Um... no.”

“What were you doing then?” Lea asked.

“Serving Jesus.”

And just like that, Hippie and a Nun was born.

Through humor, contrast, creativity, and a shared love of storytelling, the two built a creative partnership rooted in authenticity, emotion, and human connection. They often joke that they are “platonic wives” — a title earned through countless hours creating, dreaming, laughing, surviving chaos, and building art together.

Their work explores identity, spirituality, queerness, trauma, healing, fear, transformation, and the beautifully complicated parts of being human.

comedy, and outsider storytelling, Hippie and a Nun Productions creates films centered around the people who have spent their lives searching for where they belong.
 
At its core, the company exists to create stories — and community — for the outsiders.
